I have run into very few article...What a neat post!
I have run into very few articles,blog posts and people who are actively challenging any knowledge problems.

I think the field of economics has hitched its fortunes to culture of "we need more science and math" in school. However, nobody ever asks is "science" the ultimate method to understand the world, or universe, that we live in.

According to your statement;

"But policymakers and the public at large are, rightly, not interested in whether models are rigorous. They are interested in whether the models are useful and illuminating...",

shows a certain weakness involved involved with mathematical and scientific interpreted worlds. Data is just data, and we as humans need to determine if the data is usefull, or illuminating.If we continue to interpret the world with a disregard for ethics and focus only upon data generation, then we are heading towards a very impoverished view of the world. People are taught how to work increasingly difficult math problems, but are clueless to the actual results and implications.

Now, it seems that economics seems to have some sort of envy towards the "hard" sciences, such as engineering and physics, but even these fields are not a numbers only field. Go ahead and ask an engineer; How he calculates a "saftey factor", or how one calculates the tactile feel of handle or knob? Engineers use alot of non-scientific methods to accomplish goals, and disguise this fact by using words such as "engineering judgement".

If you are going to be an empirical thinker, then you have be aware of the pitfalls.Robbienoreply@blogger.com
